Ever since I started these new classes, I have been itching to make some tinctures. I have made decoctions and teas, but this was my first chance to break out the vodka and start creating some medicinal magic. I figured while I was gathering fresh …
For my nutrition class we have been reading The Detox Diet by Elson M. Hass, MD. In it he explains “Eat and live in a way that creates and supports health, vitality and longevity.” (Haas and Chace, 2012. p. 62). According to Haas, that involves four key lifestyle factors. Those are…
1: Follow a nontoxic diet.
2: Exercise and stretch regularly
3: Rest and sleep well
4: Adopt a great attitude toward life and others.
Following a nontoxic diet includes eating organically grown foods whenever possible, drinking filtered or purified water, eat a natural, seasonal cuisine focusing on fresh foods as much as possible, include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, fresh fish and organic poultry, practice food combining, avoid overeating or eating too much food late in your day, cook in iron, stainless steel, glass or porcelain cookware, avoid or minimize red meats, cured meats, organ meats, refined foods, canned foods, sugar, salt, saturated fats, coffee, alcohol and nicotine.
Exercise has always been recommended for longevity and a healthy lifestyle. Just 30 minutes a day of cardio can help you lose weight, increase your respiratory health, benefits your cardiovascular health, helps elevate your mood, improves your sleep quality, and helps to improve self-confidence. Everyone has 30 minutes available a day, regardless of how busy you are and a boost to our confidence is always a bonus. Lifting weights helps tone your muscles and protects your bones, it helps to burn more calories for weight loss and is great for strengthening your heart.
Stretching helps increase mobility, range of motion, helps prevent the risk of injury, improves posture, helps to improve blood circulation, and will help reduce soreness especially after working out.
That rolls right into rest and sleep well. Did you know that more than 35% of American adults are sleep-deprived. This lack of sleep results in anxiety, health issues, mood swings, and cognitive issues. I have always heard to get 8 hours of sleep, but now it is recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep a day. Now, there are some people who feel that they function just fine on less, but over time that lack of sleep will catch up with you.
I don’t believe that I need to explain a great attitude and it’s importance in life. A positive attitude can improve your health and makes it easier to deal with stressful situations that often come up in life. Thinking positively can help increase your longevity, fights depression, and strengthen your immune system. Plus more people like being around positive people, not negative Nelly’s. 😉
The book also talks about and gives some great advice regarding detoxification. It is a great read and I recommend it to any of you out there looking to make some real changes in your life.
